Red Right Returning…September 24

(Red Right Returning, a nautical mnemonic for the side of the buoy or marker on which to pilot a ship in order to stay in the channel, is a look back at the activity of the past week of the Republican candidates in the 2012 primary. Feel free to voice your opinions on the candidates in the comment section.)

Whatdya’ know? Another Republican debate this past week. Looks like there’s going to be one in every state before this is over. It was held in Florida this time where Rick Perry is polling wildly ahead of everyone. The debate wasn’t much different than the previous one. Governor Perry and Mitt Romney went at each other again with Perry flubbing his zinger lines to the point of discomfort.

Rick Santorum had a good night where he and Romney hit Perry pretty hard on immigration. Also, they let former New Mexico Governor Gary Johnson on the stage. Johnson got the biggest applause line with a quip about his neighbour’s dogs having more shovel ready jobs than the Obama administration.

While Huntsman and Santorum have been inching up in the polls, Bachmann has been having the opposite problem. Her continued verbal gaffes and her Palinesque obstinate decision not to correct them combined with a staff turnover and now money problems have proven detrimental to her once shining star.

Once again the audience made news but not for applauding executions. This time it was for booing a You Tube video of a soldier who had come out of the closet after last weeks final step in the repeal of DADT. Several candidates said it was ‘unfortunate’.

On the Democratic side of the news, President Obama made good on his promise to take his jobs plan to the people. And he did it right in the Republican’s backyard by holding a rally at a bridge in need of repairs between John Boehner’s state of Ohio and Mitch McConnell’s state of Kentucky. Expect to see more of campaigner Obama in the coming months.

I like Jon Huntsman. I disagree with some of his positions, but of all the GOP candidates, he is the only one I could live with for the next four years. I live in Southern Utah and lived here during the years he was governor, 2005 to 2009. I thought that he was a good governor and a reasonable man. I support Barack Obama, but i could live with a Huntsman presidency if I must.

    RE: Huntsman
He’s definitely the adult in the room. I don’t get the Mormon thing but Huntsman is the contender that the Dems should worry about
