Just when you thought it couldn’t get any more interesting: another blonde white woman emerges to corroborate the sexual harassment charges against Herman Cain. Now it looks like the women who Herman Cain denies ever sexually harassing are planning to hold a joint press conference. The whole affair seems to be turning into a ‘he said, they said’ scenario.
Cain held his own presser on Tuesday to reiterate his denial(s). Even Cain began to distance himself from himself as he continually used third person references. He also claimed that this is a vast left wing conspiracy of the ‘Democrat machine’ (misuse of the term Democrat and Democratic is a common conservative pejorative). Newsflash, Mr. Cain: this story was broken by a conservative political blog, corroborated by conservative political talk show hosts who witnessed the incidents, blamed by your campaign upon former staffers working at other Republican campaigns, and finally brought forth by at least two Republican women. The ‘Democrat machine’ appears to have had nothing to do with your controversy. It would seem that this distraction from our presidential run is of your own making.
The Old Testament speaks of the sons of Adam and Eve; Cain and Able. Cain kills his brother in what is arguably the first act of jealousy (God accepted Able’s gift of animal sacrifice over Cain’s gift of produce). Although it would seem that Herman Cain’s sin is lust. He seems to have issues of coveting women. In that regard he is ‘not his brother’s keeper’. As punishment for his brother’s murder, Cain was made to wander the Earth forever. It would appear the Herman Cain is destined to wander through political purgatory for his sins.
Mr. Cain would like us to believe that he is the victim of an unwarranted political attack because he is a black Republican. I suggest that he is merely the result of a lackluster field of Republican candidates and an unplanned political agenda that got too much attention and interrupted a perfectly good book tour. If four or more dead bodies were found on my property, then I don’t think it would be surprising if I became suspect in being involved in their murder. That, in and of itself, should cause anyone to think twice about giving this man the highest office in the land.
What continues to bother me the most is the media’s pass on Cain’s alleged bad behaviour. Instead of holding Mr. Cain accountable, the media has been all to eager to impugn the the integrity of the women who have come forward with the allegations. I don’t care what these women have done in their lives, the allegations need to be taken seriously whether they are New York City Socialites or hookers on Fifth Avenue. And the fact that there are so many women coming forward is fairly damning. I don’t think there’s a concerted group of Democrats that could come up with this creative of a conspiracy.
The abuse of power of one’s office to coerce sex from those less empowered is wrong under any circumstance. And the fear of being pilloried is the reason women are afraid to come forward in a far too many of these cases. It’s the equivalent of saying the woman deserved to be raped because she was dressed provocatively. It’s turning the victim into the perpetrator. It’s as though she were just some sort of speed trap intentionally set to take down a wealthy businessman.
